ABOUT THE MODEL
Understand team strength, assess season performance and explore match forecasts.
Football results reflect both team quality and randomness. Fine margins can decide a match, so the points earned may not fully reflect how well a team played. Over the longer term, underlying performance is more predictive of future results than points alone.
The Ninety Index is built on evidence about which aspects of performance indicate team strength. It applies those findings to detailed data from thousands of matches, using advanced statistical techniques within a proprietary methodology. Non-penalty expected goals (NPxG), which measures chance quality from shots other than penalties, is just one of several inputs.

Explore underlying performance across the season through overall, attacking and defensive levels. The Season level gives a fuller picture than expected points (xPts) alone.
Explore each team’s outlook for the full season. Compare projected points totals and the range of possible outcomes as the remaining fixtures unfold.
Explore a matchup between two clubs or two international teams. Compare forecast goals and the chances of each result, then try another pairing to see how the outlook changes.
Goal forecasts vary by team and matchup. For example, a forecast of 1.6 goals means that team would average 1.6 goals if the same match were played many times. A 60% win probability means a win is favoured, while the draw and defeat together account for the remaining 40%.
The last-update time shows when the published figures were updated. Use the snapshot selector to explore earlier ratings, and the guide above each table for more detail on its measures.
The Ninety Index was created by Dr Matthew Rand, a behavioural scientist with broad experience across academic research and industry. The project brings together his research expertise and interest in football to better understand team performance and predict match outcomes.
